Cameryn Moore Comes to My House, Brings “Phone Whore”, Smut Slam, Dirty Talkin’, and a General Whirlwind of Sexy

I’m calling it now: On Monday the 23rd, I’m gonna get home from work, faceplant on the couch, and not budge until I have to get up for work again!

Yes, kids, my Year of Upheaval™ (which is really starting to get closer to two years at this point, but…) continues to bring about lots of big change, which is why I’ve neglected my poor blog yet again. It’s good change, at least, knock on all things wooden to keep it that way. At the end of August, when I’d barely recovered from a fabulous but frenetic Fringe season, I left my job of nine years to take a position as Marketing Director for a small but growing family of companies that includes the amazing adult boutique Lotus Blooms and its kinky sibling, BoundOne. It’s really kind of a dream job, and it let me achieve the major goal of shedding my mild-mannered secret identity at work (I mean, when your burlesque career is a *selling point* in your job interview…) but it’s also been nonstop busy, especially as we coordinated a festive and sexy Grand Opening weekend for the new store in Adams Morgan.

I definitely wasn’t planning it that way.

Cameryn Moore in a moment from “Phone Whore”

Last April, I went to CatalystCon East for the second time and this time I met Cameryn Moore, award-winning playwright/performer, sex educator/activist, bona-fide phone sex operator, and self-described “sidewalk pornographer”. I was impressed by her both as a panelist and performer. She was looking for help from someone in or near DC who could point her towards venues and people for her tour stop in November to premiere her one-woman show Phone Whore: A One-Act Play with Frequent Interruptions. I introduced myself and said I knew a lot of people and venues. We got to talking, and next thing I know, I’ve signed on to be her local producer for her tour stop!

So, the way that life has of upending your sincere good intentions to clear your schedule to focus on producing, instead I went from Fringe to new job to staging a Grand Opening to discover that it was time to get into full swing as producer, and Cameryn’s arrival on my doorstep, Smut Stand typewriter in hand.

It’s all good. We’re about to embark on one hell of a fun week, and I will sleep soundly at the end of it. Until, of course, Black Friday…

ANYWAY. I was about to tell you about that week of fun so that you can join in!

This coming Monday the 16th, Cameryn and I will both be guest performers at La-Ti-Do, which I reviewed here about a year or so ago. I’ll be singing and she’ll be doing spoken word. After being a big fan of La-Ti-Do since that first visit, I’m getting to play with them for the first time and I am SO stoked for it!

Tuesday, we’re going to the weekly Black Rose meeting to see what they’re up to and hang out with cool kinksters. (This is something, incidentally, that I get to do now as part of my job– just to be part of the scene regularly and make friends!)

On Wednesday, Cameryn’s hosting DC’s very first Smut Slam at Bossa Bistro + Lounge. It’s basically a storytelling slam competition but all the stories are real-life stories about sex. We have a panel of celebrity judges that includes Regie Cabico from La-Ti-Do, the local poetry/spoken word scene, Capturing Fire, and so much more; Shivali Chevtastic, comedian and singer who has co-produced many spoken word/comedy/variety events including the Encyclopedia Show which I had the pleasure of performing in once; Mindi Mimosa, co-founder and c0-host of Barenaked Comedy, the monthly burlesque & standup extravaganza; Che Monique, co-founder and producer of Chocolate City Burlesque & Cabaret; and Jennifer “Jelly” Crawford, co-host of the Jellyvision Show podcast and co-founder of the recent successful DC PodFest. Come out, have some drinks, listen to sex stories, and maybe even compete in the slam to win some sweet swag. It’s gonna be amazing.

Thursday, we’re going over to HIPS for the grand opening reception for their new space. I love HIPS and their staff is just awesome, and I’m so delighted to get to go celebrate with them!

On Friday and Saturday at 8 PM both nights, Phone Whore plays at the Atlas Performing Arts Center’s Lab I. It’s an intimate theater space, deliberately, for Cameryn’s award-winning one-woman show drawn from her experiences as a long-time phone sex operator. The show itself runs only about an hour, but there’s a talk-back with Cameryn afterward, and you really should stay for it. If you think you know what it’s like to be a PSO from stuff you saw in the movies or on TV…you probably don’t. Hell, I consider myself pretty worldly, and *I* still learned a lot about the realities of phone sex work when I read the script. It’s by turns funny, touching, challenging, intense as hell, thoughtful, and incredibly no-holds-barred. Cameryn doesn’t sugar-coat anything– in real life or onstage. I’m pretty sure that you will have seen nothing quite like this show anytime this year.

We wrap up the week on Sunday with her workshop, “Intimacy Improv“, at Lotus Blooms in DC. Want to learn how to dirty talk from an actual sex worker who is also a professional performer? Well, now’s your chance. Don’t miss it!

And if you need a little fascinating bedtime reading, allow me to recommend Cameryn’s posts. She’s as much a force of nature on the page as she is in person and she will get you laughing, thinking, gasping, and who knows what else.

So that’s what I’m up to these days, my darlings! Come out and play with us this week, and then afterward I’ll get back in the habit of posting here more often and letting you know when you can see me hit the stage more often again myself. Till then!
