The Perfect Storm of High Femme and Lowbrow
A classically trained triple threat who ran away to join the burlesque, Diva Darling is a force of nature who’s the perfect storm of high femme and lowbrow. This curvy, queer Beltway bombshell lobbies the audiences of the nation’s capital for radical expansions to existing beauty standards and advocates for entertainment reform to ensure equal access to variety on all the public stages of America. Her burlesque performances are character-driven short stories that are decidedly neo in style and range from slapstick comedy to gothic noir. She was nominated for “Best Burlesque Dancer” in the Washington Blade‘s “Best of Gay DC” awards in 2014 and received two Favorite Performer awards in DC Metro Theater Arts’ “2015 Capital Fringe Honors” for her performances in Vaudevillian Romp and Barenaked Comedy.
This velvet-voiced vamp comes by her name honestly when she takes to the mic to fire up a smoky torch song or bring down the house with a showstopper. As a femme-cee, she puts the “imp” back in “imperious” with a mix of wisecracking banter, old-school glam, and the ability to get an audience screaming for more.
Diva studied burlesque with Lola Rose and made her burly debut with the DC Gurly Show, DC’s longest-running and only queer burlesque troupe where she performed monthly at Phase 1 Capitol Hill. She has also been seen in Best of Burlesque(er), Whedonism, Lord of the Pasties, Under the Sheets, and Orange Is the New Burlesque. She is a semi-regular performer at Barenaked Comedy, has been a guest performer with the DC Kings, and performed on the Capital Pride mainstage. She has appeared at venues from Charlottesville through Baltimore including the former Red Palace, the Windup Space in Baltimore, the Black Cat, and the Cherry Blossom Burlesque Festival. She has studied bel canto (operatic) voice technique, ballet, jazz, physical comedy, stage combat, and classic theater with an emphasis on Shakespeare.
If your show hasn’t quite met its “Big, Blonde, & Beautiful” quota yet, please get in touch with me about working together! I’m available for hire for burlesque acts, cabaret vocal numbers, and femme-cee’ing. I’m based out of the DC metro area and primarily perform in the Baltimore-Richmond corridor, but I love to travel and would be happy to talk about visiting your city.
You can email me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org, or drop me a note via my Contact page. Please let me know the date, time, and location of your show, which type of performance you’re interested in, and terms of compensation.
I’m a strongly neo-burlesque performer who dips the occasional toe in the classic end of the pool. My acts are character- and story-driven, emphasizing either physical comedy or a Gorey-esque dark humor, along with a healthy dose of nerdlesque. As a performer of size, I literally embody an aggressive, powerful sexuality underscored by a fondness for metal, hard rock, and blues music. My repertoire also includes more than one vocal burlesque that combines striptease with singing.
I am available to perform at private functions such as play parties or bachelorette or birthday parties, and I am able to coordinate a private show for your party with other local performers. Please contact me to discuss details and receive an estimate.
My specialties as a singer are sultry torch/lounge songs and jazz standards as well as high-energy belt numbers, and I bring the retro dazzle of sequins, feathers, and rhinestones to the stage when I sing. I have a catalog of songs ready to perform at any time, and I would love to talk with you about bringing a little vocal variety into your show. I also do nerdlesque cabaret/variety songs!
If your venue’s doors open early and you’re thinking of alternatives or additions to pre-show go-go dancers, I can provide you with varying-length sets of smoky vocals to heat up the crowd for your show.
When you need a brassy, sassy mama to keep energy high and the show moving smoothly, I can be your hostess with the most-ass! My years of experience onstage as well as in public speaking have taught me to read a crowd and plug into their energy, knowing when and how to whip them into a frenzy or bring them to focused antici…pation. I love to play and banter with an audience as much as I love setting the right energy for each performer. I can also run games and prepare between-act bits to involve the audience and keep them engaged during longer setups.
